About Us
Mike Tripp - Producer, Director, Cinematographer, Photographer, DVD Authoring & Subtitles
In April of 1990 Mike graduated as a pharmacist from the University of British Columbia.
Later that year he donned his first set of SCUBA gear and got certified in the chilly
waters of Vancouver, Canada. Four years later, after becoming a PADI instructor, he
left his country and pharmacy career behind for the warmer waters of the Caribbean and
a job at Club Med. With stops in Turks and Caicos, St. Lucia, Cancun, the Bahamas,
Haiti, and even the Pacific islands of Moorea and Fiji, Mike developed a love for all
things aquatic and a passion for spreading the word about what lies beneath. "As a dive
instructor there is no better feeling than watching someone take their first few breaths
underwater and seeing their eyes light up with excitement - you know you have changed
their life forever!"
In 2000 Mike purchased his first video housing in preparation for a trip to Australia and by doing so began spreading the word with dynamic and captivating images. Since then he has rarely done a dive without his camera and has added the countries of Malaysia, Thailand, Australia, Fiji, Indonesia and the Federated Sates of Micronesia to an ever growing list of countries captured on film.
Diving the islands of Yap, Palau, Chuuk, Pohnpei, Kosrae, Bali, Guam, and North Sulawesi, to name a few, could not have been possible without using the Northern Mariana island of Saipan as a "home base" for the past 4 years. "Saipan has been great, not only have I been able to hone my skills in some of the clearest and most diverse waters in the world but I’ve also been able to dive all these other wonderful places without crossing the international date line!"
Now, with the release of The Underwater World of Saipan DVD, Mike can add director and producer to his line of credits and at the same time has found a medium on which he can bring the beauty of Saipan’s underwater world to divers and non-divers alike. "As a cinematographer it’s not enough to just shoot great images, you must tell a story. I believe we have captured what it is like to dive these magnificent waters and hope the DVD will inspire people to come and experience it for themselves. I know their eyes will light up when they do!"
Currently Mike can be found on Saipan promoting his DVD and producing additional independent projects through his company, Mike Tripp Productions. In addition, Mike has begun the long process of putting together the second installment of "The Underwater World of" - but he won’t tell what the next location will be. "It’s a secret - you’ll just have to check back soon."
