Obyan
By the nature of its southern location and proximity to the island of Tinian, this idyllic
white sand beach is well protected from northern trade winds and southern ocean swells.
As a result divers are almost always treated to an easy shore dive with exceptionally calm
conditions and amazing visibility. Entry through one of two short cuts in the fringing reef
leads divers along extended coral fingers to numerous coral heads scattered about on the
white sandy bottom. With an average depth of 40 to 60 feet, there is plenty of time to take
in the diversity of life that makes up each of these isolated coral communities. Like an
oasis in the desert, each is teaming with fascinating life including schools of reticulated
dasyllus darting in and out and tiny hawkfish seeking protection. Over the sand numerous
scavengers dig into the fine particles searching for something to eat while large colonies
of garden eels dance in the gentle currents that deliver microscopic morsels to their door.
